Pillow Talk - Styling Spaces With Comfort and Color

”Cooler than the flip-side of my pillow, that’s right” - uncle kracker

Oh, how I love a good throw pillow. I’ll take one in every size, for every season. Are they a little polarizing? Maybe—but I’m here to share the secrets behind their style, size, and function.

Style

Style is the first and most important aspect of using pillows in your space. They're the eye candy of a room.

Step 1: Choose a color scheme. I love using three colors in varying shades—it keeps things cohesive while adding depth.

Step 2: Mix patterns and textures to create a natural, relaxed feel. Solids, stripes, florals, boucle, velvet—go crazy. Layer different fabrics and patterns to bring personality and charm into your space.

Style is a reflection of you, so choose pillows that you’re naturally drawn to—ones that make you happy

Size

Group your pillows in odd numbers for a more organic look. On a sofa, three pillows of different sizes work beautifully in a corner, while five to seven can span the entire couch for a fuller effect.

For accent chairs, a single rectangular lumbar pillow is perfect.

A tip I swear by: always size your inserts 2 inches larger than your covers. It makes the pillows look fuller and helps them hold their shape—plus, they’re easier to style.

Function

If you love throw pillows but your partner doesn’t, comfort is your best argument.

In our home, pillows make movie nights cozier, and the kids always grab one to sit on during game nights around the coffee table.

But comfort matters—skip anything heavily embellished, beaded, or scratchy. For deep sofas, large pillows make seating more comfortable, especially for guests.

Always consider durability and ease of care. I avoid covers that are dry-clean only. If I can’t toss them in the wash, they’re not for us. I don’t want a pillow that’s just for “looks”, I want pillows I can use.

A Parting Pro Tip

Invest in a few 22- or 24-inch pillows in a neutral tone—ivory, cream, tan, gray—these are your staples. Use them year-round.

For smaller, layered pillows, switch things up with the seasons. Swapping pillow covers is the easiest, most space-saving way to refresh your decor.
